CRUISING TIPS FOR FIRST TIMERS

Unlocking the Perfect Voyage

Embarking on your first cruise can be an exciting and memorable experience. With magnificent ocean views, onboard entertainment, and the thrill of exploring multiple destinations, cruising offers a unique way to travel.  We have compiled some essential tips and insights to help you have a smooth and enjoyable journey on the high seas.  Sail on...

1. Choose the Right Cruise Line and Itinerary. Selecting the ideal cruise line and itinerary is vital for a memorable experience. Consider factors such as your preferred destination, onboard amenities, cruise duration, and budget. Research different cruise lines to find one that aligns with your interests, whether it is adventure, relaxation, or cultural immersion. Opt for itineraries that include ports of call you have been longing to visit. Balancing onboard activities and shore excursions ensures an enriching voyage tailored to your preferences.

2. Pack Smart and Prepare for Onboard Activities. Efficient packing is key to a stress-free cruise. Check the dress code for various onboard venues and pack accordingly. Don't forget essentials like swimwear, comfortable shoes, and sunscreen. Familiarize yourself with the cruise line's policies regarding dining attire and specialty restaurant reservations. Research onboard activities and make reservations in advance for popular shows, spas, or special events. Bring a power strip or extension cord to accommodate multiple electronic devices in your cabin. Also, you may not be able to bring an iron, so check and pack accordingly.

3. Pack some Emergency Medicine. It is always helpful to have some medicine on hand, for example for motion sickness, headache, stomach upset. If you happen to get sick, and we hope you don’t, you won’t have to rush to the onboard clinic while in pain.

4. Pre-Check in Online. Some cruise lines allow you to check-in up to one month ahead of your cruise date.

5. Know your cruise Port Terminal Before arriving at the port. This will reduce the stress of trying to locate the correct terminal, especially if you are running late.

6. Arrive near your Departure Port destination Early. If traveling from out of state, plan to arrive and stay close your cruise departure port area at least one day before. Do not risk missing your cruise due to flight delays or unexpected traffic issues.

7. On Embarkment day, bring a small day bag with your Swimsuit. You may be able to enjoy the water amenities (hot tubs, the pools, water slides etc.) before the crowds. Most people might not be aware that the water amenities are open, so you can have them all to yourself.

8. Get to Know Your Ship. Once onboard, take the time to explore the ship and familiarize yourself with its layout. Locate important areas such as the dining venues, pools, entertainment spaces, and the guest services desk. Study the daily activity schedule to plan your days and make the most of the onboard amenities. Utilize interactive maps available on mobile apps or screens around the ship to navigate effortlessly.

9. Budget and Manage Your Expenses. While cruises offer an all-inclusive feel, it's important to budget for additional expenses. Allocate funds for gratuities, specialty dining, onboard shopping, and optional activities like spa treatments or excursions. Set a daily spending limit and keep track of your expenses to avoid any surprises when settling the final bill. Consider pre-booking beverage packages or internet plans to manage costs.

10. You may be able to bring a Bottle of Wine. If you choose to not purchase a drink package, some cruise lines allow you to bring a sealed bottle of wine, some amount of sealed juice and water in your luggage. No hard liquor is allowed though. Check with your cruise line.

11. Embrace Onshore Adventures. Make the most of your cruise by exploring the destinations you will visit. Research shore excursions offered by the cruise line or consider independent options. Opt for activities that align with your interests, whether it is cultural tours, outdoor adventures, or food and wine experiences. Allow time to explore each port on your own and immerse yourself in the local culture. Remember to respect local customs and return to the ship within the designated time.
